Plan your visit to Ribadesella

Things to do in Ribadesella normally involve visiting the coast (beaches, caves, seafront promenades…), especially in summer. Ribadesella is a quiet locality devoted to fishing in winter, and one important tourist destination in summer. This villa is divided into two main areas, separated by the sea inlet. The old city, recently declared Historic-Artistic Site, has not changed so much since the 17th century. In case you had more time when visiting this locality, try to come by Colunga or Lastres.

The oldest construction still standing is Prieto-Cutre Palace (16th century). It is located in Reina María Cristina Plaza; and it is the headquarters of the Town Hall of the locality. Some other buildings in Ribadesella that must be highlighted are: Ardines House, González Prieto House (in the Church plaza: perfect to understand more about the atmosphere back a couple of centuries ago), Collado House (it has a beautiful coat of arms from the 18th century) and Pixuecu House and the Atalaya Palace.

The Grúa Promenade is open since the 18th century. On the way, you can find the Fuentina, representing a nymph (xana) and some other mythological figures as a tribute to Pepín de Pría’s La Fonte del Cay. At the end of the path there is a roundabout which used to work to assist the ships coming to this villa. From this promenade, climbing Monte Corberu, you will eventually reach to the Renaissance Nuestra Señora of Guía Chapel, remodeled in 1892 -it is a good viewpoint.

In order to get to know the other side of Ribadesella, you must cross the Princesa Letizia Promenade. There you will find Santa Marina Beach, an area that was designed in the 20th century. We highlight some constructions in this area such as Marquioness Argüelles House and Villa Rosario (both are hotels nowadays), and the Brothers Uría-Aza House (interesting sculpture collection).

You must see one of the most important prehistorical sites in ancient cave art: Tito Bustillo Cave. Discovered in 1968, it holds inside a great number of paintings. It is a gorgeous place worth to go. It was recently added to the UNIESCO Heritage Sites. You can also pay a visit to Tito Bustillo Art Center and the Cuevona, another natural monument. However, the access to the surrounding caves is quite restricted, among them: Moría Cave, Cierro Cave and Les Pedroses Cave.

Besides, Ribadesella was the birthplace of the famous painter Darío de Regoyos (avant-garde movement in the late 19th century). Surrounding this locality (which belongs to the so-called Dinosaur Coast together with Gijón, Villaviciosa and Colunga), there are many interesting attractions: Santa María of Junco Church (Romanesque in style, whose triumphal arch is built upon six columns with capitals representing monsters), San Mamés of Cuerres (it has crosses and engravings from the 14th century), San Esteban Temple (Romanesque in style), Santa Rita Chapel, and San Martín of Collera Church. Do not miss the Junco Tower (14th century) and San Esteban of Leces (16th century).

This locality also belongs to the Villas Marineras together with Cudillero y Llanes, Baiona, Sanxenxo, Ortigueira,Viveiro, San Vicente de la Barquera, Santoña and Laredo.
