Morón de la Frontera

A Kingdom Taifa and home of the most battered cock

Morón de la Frontera was the seat of a tiny taifa Kingdom and retains important Baroque monuments. It is also known by its lime, its flamenco festival and the history of the “cock”, example of the jointly and independent character of its inhabitants.

Plan your stay in Morón de la Frontera

Walking around the places that we selected in the section “What to see in Morón de la Frontera” can lead us more than half a day. A route to the West must include the University campues of Osuna, its neighboring Estepa and Puente Genil; If you have time, visit the neighbouring site of Fuente Alamo. An alternative to this, is to climb to Marchena, then take the highway A-380 to Carmona, and have lunch there; and if you have time left in the afternoon, continue to the South to visit Mairena del Alcor.

We start the visit in Morón de la Frontera with the so-called “The Small Cathedral of the Southern Highlands”, which is the Church of San Miguel Arcángel, built between 1506 and 1730 in Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque styles; eleven architects were involved in the works.

The Church of San Ignacio de Loyola, was built by the Jesuits in 1627. There is an image of the tabernacle heart of Jesus in its Baroque façade.

The Town Hall from 1593, was reformed in 1878. We highlights its clock of Losada in its façade, which is very similar to the one that is in the Puerta del Sol in Madrid.

Another unique landscape of the town are The Race Gardens or “Jardines de la Carrera”. This is the perfect place to stroll observing the typically Andalusian style. The Church of San Francisco de Asís (1541) is a rectangular Temple proto-Baroque with an incredible altarpiece from the 18th century.

Jardines de la Carrera

If you wan to live an outdoor experience, you will find in Morón de la Frontera, the ruins of the old medieval castle of the town.

We recommend to travel to The Esparteros Highlands, to an area known as “The Village of the limestone”, to visit the Museum of the LIME.

Each summer Morón de la Frontera organizes the flamenco festival called Andalusian Gazpacho, one of the oldest in the province of Seville.
