5 of the most unusual beaches of Spain

Spain has almost 6.000 km of shore. With wonderful beaches and incredible landscapes, Spanish people enjoy these beaches the whole year. But all of them are different, and some have a little something that makes them special: a small detail, a story, a landscape. Here are some of the most special ones. But keep in mind that there are a lot more!

Playa Sakoneta, Guipúzcoa

One of the most singular beaches in Spain is Sakoneta. It has 500 meters of sand that will leave you breathless thanks to its cliffs. Due to a phenomenon called Flysch, the waves have eroded the walls. During all this time, an incredible sculpted landscape has been formed by the strength of the sea.

To go to the Sakoneta Beach, in the Basque Coast Geopark, we recommend you to do it in the days of low tides.

Playa Gulpiyuri, Asturias

This beach has two things that make it one of the most curious ones in Spain. Firstly, its length; it is one of the smallest in the world. In barely 50 meters, there is a small natural paradise which has been declared Natural Monument. The second thing is that this is a beach situated in-land. Well, how can that be? It is called dolina. The sea creates a cave in the inside of the rocks and with time, the last part of the cave sinks. Therefore, water appears on the other side of the mountain.

This process has created a place protected from the wind, with salt water, surrounded by green places and nature. It is perfect for the smallest of the family.

Charco Verde de los Clicos, Lanzarote

In Parque Natural de los Volcanes, inside of the Timanfaya National park, we can find the Lago Verde. This interesting formation in the middle of a black volcanic sand beach is 100 meters long and it is characterized by its intense green color. This is due to the seaweed belonging to the group ruppia marítima, and the sulfur. The name “Clico” comes from an ancient crustacean that inhabited in this lake till the XIX century, but has already extinguished.

Situated in front of the Atlantic ocean, this lake has turned its landscape in one of the most peculiars of Spain. Its connection with the sea takes place through subterranean waters, which join it with the waters of the big ocean.

La Barra, Las Canteras Beach, Gran Canaria

If you are from Gran Canaria, you surely know Las Canteras Beach, one of the best known urban beaches.  But what makes it one of the most curious beaches of Spain is La Barra. La Barra consists of a rock formation situated parallel to the shore, thus allowing for a barrier to be created that can stop the strong current. It protects the whole beach from north train of waves.

A long time ago, it used to be exploited as a quarry to extract the rock and use it in buildings such as the Canarias Cathedral. It can only be accessed when there is low tide. And when this happens, the best option is to use some goggles, dive towards La Barra and enjoy both out and under the sea.

Beach of the Cathedrals, Lugo

In spite of being one of the best known beaches in our country, we can’t forget this landscape in a list about the most curious Spanish beaches. And what makes it so singular? The incredible rock formations sculpted by the sea make this beach quite a particular place. The arches remember those of the gothic cathedrals and are up to 30 meters high.

Although the views are limited and you can only access them when there is a low tide, it is completely worth it. You can find it in Ribadeo, Lugo, and it has been declared Natural Monument. The magic of the sounds made by the wind and the sea between the rock gaps make the “Aguas Santas” beach, its real name, a magical place.
